How to install belt drive & Internal gear hubs
Juhani

What hubs fit on the FUBi bicycle?

The bike uses an OLD of 120mm with horizontal dropouts also know as fork ends in this case. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fork_end

-Only single speed hubs and internal gear hubs can be used.
-Preferably hubs should be 120mm OLD.
-Hubs of  up to 127mm OLD can possible be used, the chain-stay will flex so much.

Down bellow is a list of hubs that can be used. (You are free to comment if you find any other that could fit.)

Single speed hubs:
Any single speed or flip-flop hub of 120mm OLD

3-speed hubs:
Shimano Rear Hub Nexus SG3R40
8-speed hub
According to their product catalog you should be able to get this hub with freewheel and 120mm OLD
5-speed hub
According to their product catalog you should be able to get this hub with freewheel and 125mm OLD

We recommend the Sturmey Archer 3 speed hub. It is among the lightest hubs. Many internal gear hubs are almost 2x the weight of this. It is an old and proven hub technology. Also we know it works well with the belt drive setup we use.

We get a lot of request if the frame work with 135mm hubs, therefore we will plan to change the frame to 135mm OLD in the next production series.

How to install belt drive on FUBi?

This is the setup we use and have tested. You can try other setups but we can not guarantee it works.

We use 55 cogs on front sprocket and 22 on rear sprocket. This setup gives a gear ratio of 2.5 which is good for both single speed and internal gear hubs.

Here you can check out Gates beltdrive online shop: shop.carbondrive.net

They also have a calculator to see what setup fits the bike:

We haven’t tried any other brand than Gates, therefore the link are to their site. There are some Chinese brands but we don’t know how good they are.

For the 52cm frame (408mm long chain stay)
With 55 front and 22 rear cogs the belt will be 113 teeth.

For the 58cm frame (420mm long chain stay)
With 55 front and 22 rear cogs the belt will be 115 teeth.
